Every year, without fail, Thanksgiving gives us at least one small crisis. Maybe you forgot the brown sugar. Maybe you miscounted how many people are coming over. Maybe the dog stole the dinner rolls right off the counter — hey, it happens.
And of course, the realization always hits you on Thanksgiving Day, right when most grocery stores are closed and you’re staring into the pantry like it personally betrayed you.
But good news: while many stores lock up for the holiday, a few spots around Milwaukee remain open for those “I swear I bought this” emergencies. Whether you need butter, broth, spices, foil, or a whole backup pie, these stores have your back.
Here are the ones keeping the lights on this Thanksgiving (NOTE: these are subject to change...and the info I've got right now):
Pick ’n Save / Metro Market
As part of the Kroger family, these stores will be open with reduced holiday hours. They generally shut down earlier than normal, so if you need something, go early. It’s the go-to for those mid-cooking panic runs — gravy packets, baking essentials, or anything you forgot during your big pre-holiday shop.
Whole Foods
Whole Foods will be open with modified hours, usually closing up in the mid-afternoon. It’s a lifesaver if you're hunting for something organic, gluten-free, dairy-free, vegan, or just a little nicer than what you’d find elsewhere. Need a last-minute charcuterie board item? This is your spot.
The Fresh Market
Expect hours from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. It’s a great place if you want something higher-end for your meal — maybe you need fresh herbs, a dessert upgrade, or just one more gourmet side to round out the table. Holiday hours may vary slightly, so earlier is better.
Food4Less
This store is the workhorse of the bunch, generally sticking to its 6 a.m. to midnight schedule even on Thanksgiving. If time gets away from you (or someone springs a surprise visit), you’ll still be covered well into the evening.
If you’re the type who plans everything a week ahead, this probably won’t matter to you — but if you're like the rest of us who suddenly realize we're out of butter after the mashed potatoes are already halfway made, at least you’ve got options.
Thanksgiving is chaotic enough. Knowing where you can run for a last-minute save? That’s one thing you can cross off the stress list.
